2021 MLB
Numbers to Watch
MLB teams
are preparing to start spring training. The players’ association decided to
reject a proposal from the league to shorten the season to 154 games and push
back Opening Day.
With other
professional sports leagues having pulled off their seasons, MLB
players are ready to go. Here’s a look at the 2021 MLB numbers to watch.

28
The New
York Yankees have won 27 World Series titles and are going all in on winning
No. 28. The Yankees didn’t make any major moves in the offseason though they
did re-sign infielder D.J. LeMahieu to a six-year, $90 million deal.
Giancarlo
Stanton and Aaron Judge remain in the meat of the batting order, but New York
lost three starting pitchers. The pitching rotation will be the biggest
question for New York as they try to claim World Series win No. 28.
Make it a
Double
Freddie
Freeman won last year’s National League MVP while leading the Atlanta Braves to
an NL East crown. Freeman hit .341 with 13 homers and 53 RBI in the shortened
2020 season.
He would
love to repeat both feats. Another MVP and another division title. What he
would really like is to add a World Series championship. Then, he could
celebrate with his new offseason additions - twin boys.

Five Plus
400
The Dodgers
starting pitching rotation includes five of the best in the major leagues.
Clayton Kershaw is the owner of three NL Cy Young Awards and teammate Trevor
Bauer won the award in 2020. Walker Buehler, David Price, and Julio Urias close
out the best starting five in the majors.
That is why
Los Angeles is the +400 favorite to repeat as World Series champions. No team
has repeated since the New York Yankees who won three from 1998 to 2000.
$340
Million & Change
The San
Diego Padres have worked hard to build a winner. They came close last year,
losing the NLCS to the Dodgers. The Padres went all-in on their star Fernando
Tatis Jr. in the offseason.
Tatis
signed a 14-year, $340 million contract that would keep the young star in San
Diego well into his 30s.
The Padres
didn’t stop there. They added former AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell and Yu
Darvish to the pitching rotation. San Diego is now given +800 odds to win this
year’s World Series. Only the Yankees and Dodgers have better odds.

- Let’s Play 162!
The MLB
Players Association rejected a proposal from the league to push back the start
of the season and play a shorter schedule. The league proposed starting the
season one week later and playing 154 games. Players would be paid for a full
162-game schedule.
The players
association didn’t like it since players were preparing for the normal
schedule. With the MLBPA rejecting the proposal, Opening Day is still set for
April 1.

Lucky
Seven
While all
eyes will be on the Dodgers, Yankees, and Padres; there are a handful of teams
that could sneak up and win it all.
Washington
has a pitching rotation that can rival the Dodgers. The Brewers have a former
MVP in Christian Yelich. Kansas City, San Francisco, and Houston all have
rosters capable of a World Series run. Boston could return to greatness after
the Mookie Betts trade and the best team in the American League could be the
Chicago White Sox.
