NFL Week 4 Key Numbers
Covering
the Spread
In Week 4,
NFL favorites covered the point spread in eight games, and the underdogs
covered in five. One game was postponed until later in the season, and two
games were pushes against
the spread. The Packers and the Chiefs overcame the point
spread by a touchdown, continuing their dominant play on the season.

In addition
to the Packers, the Seahawks are the only other team to cover the spread in
every game. On the road against Miami, Seattle was giving 5.5 points to the
Dolphins and won the game 31-23.
The
underdog with the best performance against the spread was Philadelphia. The
Eagles were getting 7.5 points from San Francisco and ended up beating the
49ers 25-20 on the road.
Three other
underdogs, Minnesota, Cleveland and Carolina, were also outright winners in
their games. All of them won by at least eight points, with Cleveland putting
up 49 points to the Cowboys' 38.

Week 3 By the Numbers.
Over and
Over and Over Again
Continuing
a season-long trend, games that paid the over exceeded the under by seven to
five in Week 4. The cumulative scores of Week 4 games were 36 points higher
than the total of all of the over/under lines. That's an average of 2.4 points
a game higher than the over/under.
There were
three games in which the total points far exceeded the over/under lines. The
line on Cleveland's 49-38 defeat of Dallas was 55.5, a difference of 31.5
points.
Denver got
its first victory by beating the winless New York Jets 37-28 with an over/under
line of 39.5. The Broncos came within a couple of points of beating the line by
themselves.
The Chargers
and Buccaneers were predicted to score 44.5 points between them but erupted for
69. Tom Brady led Tampa Bay to its third consecutive win by beating San Diego
38-31.

Scoring
Drought
In the
lowest-scoring game of the season, the Rams beat the Giants 17-9 to keep New
York winless. Los Angeles had been averaging almost 30 points a game, so the
44.5 over/under made sense.
The
Patriots and Chiefs are known for putting up a lot of points. But New England
played without quarterback Cam Newton, who was out with COVID-19. Instead of
combining for 54 points, the total was just 36 in the Chiefs' 26-10 win.

Still
Perfect
There are
still six undefeated teams and four that have yet to get into the victory column.
The Packers and Seahawks have covered the spread and won every game. The
Chiefs, Steelers, Titans and Bills also remain undefeated heading into Week 5.
The Titans
and Steelers were supposed to meet in Week 4, but the game was postponed to
Oct. 25. They remain 3-0 while the other teams sport perfect 4-0 records. At
least one of them should lose in Week 5, as the Titans are scheduled to host
the Bills on Sunday.
The Jets,
Giants, Falcons and Texans are winless, and all of them have done it in their
own way. Houston fired head coach Bill O'Brien after failing to win a game
against a brutal opening schedule. The Jets and Giants can't score, and the
Falcons can't hold a lead.
