NFL Week 9
By the Numbers
The NFL
season is now beyond the halfway point in a challenging 2020 season. The
favorites had another tough week, going 8-6 straight up in Week 9. It was much
worse against the spread, with the underdogs covering in nine of the 14 games.

Division
and wild card races continued to take shape, with teams emerging as favorites
to make the playoffs. One team entered the week undefeated, and another one was
still looking for their first win. The undefeated team found a way to win, and
the winless one found a way to lose.
Double-digit
Lines
The top two
teams in the AFC were double-digit favorites in their Week 9 games. Kansas City
was favored by 11 points against the Panthers and escaped with a 33-31 win. In
Dallas, Pittsburgh had to cover a 13.5 point spread but was unsuccessful in a
24-19 victory.
Betting
aside, the real barometer is a team’s won-loss record. Pittsburgh, now at 8-0,
leads the Ravens by two games and also has a victory over them. The Chiefs lead
the Raiders by two and a half games, but their only loss is to Las Vegas.

Inexplicable
Outcome
On Sunday
night, the 5.5 point favorite Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the New Orleans
Saints. After the dust had cleared, the Saints had decimated the Bucs by a
score of 38-3. It was a shocker to most who pay close attention to NFL
scores and odds. It may be hard to believe, but
the game wasn’t even that close.
Tom Brady
looked every bit of his 43 years against the Saints, hardly a defensive
juggernaut. It’s likely that the Bucs just don’t match up well against New
Orleans. After all, the Saints defeated Tampa Bay by 11 points in Week 1.
Shuffle
Off to Buffalo
The Seattle
Seahawks finally paid the price for suspect defense against a team that could
hold their own. The Buffalo Bills defeated the Seahawks 44-34 and now stand at
7-2 atop the AFC East. It’s been a long time since anyone other than the
Patriots have been a force in that division.
Although
the Chiefs and Steelers remain the favorites to meet in the AFC championship
game, the Bills could contend. Their ability to score points will keep them in
the hunt throughout the season. With the rules changes, good defense no longer
stops a good offense.

Over the
Rainbow
Continuing
a season-long trend, games in Week 9 beat the over/under by a margin of 11-3.
In four games, the margin was razor-thin, but the over was the way to go. The
over/under in the Seahawks and Bills game was 55, the highest of the week and a
favorite for those offering NFL picks.
The actual
total score of the game ended up at 78, blowing away the betting line. On the
season, across the board bets on the over would so far have netted a nice
return.
Perfection
Maintained
The
Pittsburgh Steelers were able to overcome a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit to
defeat the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas covered the spread in the game, but that is
little solace to owner Jerry Jones as he watched his team fall to 2-7.
Coincidentally,
the Patriots did the same thing to the Jets Monday night, sending the Jets to
0-9. Watching the game, it was apparent why the Jets have yet to notch a
victory in the 2020 season.
