An Inside
Look at the 2021 NHL Stats
The 2021
NHL season is just about a quarter of the way into its shortened 56-game
schedule. Already, some things are starting to fall into place.
Defending
champion Tampa Bay is playing like a defending champ despite not having Nikita
Kucherov. Vegas is owning the West Division and Toronto looks like the best of
the Canadien teams (though Montreal will not agree).

Here’s an
inside look at the 2021 NHL stats thus far this season. If you want even more advanced
NHL stats, we recently wrote an article
focusing on them.
Champs
Rule
Bettors
like to win and backing the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning
has been good so far. The Lightning are 10-3-1 overall and have covered in six of
their last eight games.
The
Lightning are the No. 1 scoring team in the NHL averaging 3.85 goals per game.
They are also the league’s top defensive team allowing just 2.00 goals per
game. Bettors love the Lightning at home where they are 5-1 ATS and the Over is
7-2 in Tampa Bay’s last nine games.
Surprise,
Surprise
The two
teams chasing Tampa Bay in the Central Division are the two biggest surprises
of the early 2021 season. Florida is 9-2-2 overall thanks to a second victory
over the Lightning in the last three games. The Panthers were underdogs in all
three games making them a strong moneyline choice. Where they lack is against
the spread where Florida is just 1-7 ATS in its last eight games.
Carolina is
10-3 overall and, like Florida, has 20 points. The Hurricanes are third in
scoring which is a direct result of Carolina being seventh in shots. Totals
bettors have liked Carolina lately as the Over is 4-1 in the team’s last five
games.

Canada’s
Best
Toronto has
been outstanding early in 2021. The Maple Leafs are 11-3-1 overall and lead the
President’s Cup race with 24 points. One of the big reasons for the team’s
success is its work on the power play.
The Leafs
are second in the NHL in power play percentage scoring on 34.78 percent of
their opportunities. Only Washington (35.48) is better.
Toronto is
fifth in scoring averaging 3.53 goals per game, but the Under has hit in four
of their last five games.
Sports
insiders know that Montreal was the top-scoring team in
the NHL averaging over four goals per game until a recent slump. In the
Canadiens last five games, they have not scored more than two goals and were
shut out in one.
Still,
Montreal is eighth in scoring averaging 3.47 goals per game. They are No. 1 in
shots taking 34.13 per game. Despite Montreal’s ability to score, all six of
the team’s last six games have seen the total go Under.
It was a
close one, but we correctly predicted our Avalanche
at Golden Knights betting pick. Go take a
look, the final score was Vegas 1 - Avs 0.
Deja Vu
At the end
of the 2019-20 regular season, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid of Edmonton
were the NHL’s point leaders. Fast forward to this season and the same two sit
atop the NHL in points again.
Draisaitl,
last year’s Hart Memorial winner as the league MVP, was the point leader last
year with 110. So far this season, he trails McDavid 30-26.
