NFL Week 14
By the Numbers
In Week 14
of the NFL season, there were seven games on the schedule with point spreads
over four points. The underdog covered the spread in three of those games, with
one pulling an outright upset. The biggest favorite of the week easily covered
a 15-point spread.
With six
teams scoring one touchdown or less, the under continued to reverse an
early-season trend. For the first part of 2020, teams were scoring at an
unprecedented pace.

Lately,
however, defenses have begun to step up as teams out of playoff contention are
having problems scoring.
Week 14
Recap
The biggest
upset of the week saw the 7.5-point underdog Philadelphia Eagles edge the New
Orleans Saints 24-21. The win kept the Eagles barely in contention in the NFC
East and kept the Saints from clinching the NFC South.
By virtue
of their two defeats of Tampa Bay, the Saints are just a win away from sewing
up the division. Anyone looking for sports
picks would have been smart to be on the Saints in those divisional
matchups.
The NFC
East showed somewhat of a resurgence, with three of the four teams recording
non-division victories. None of the teams in the division, led by Washington at
6-7, has been eliminated from contention for the crown.
Despite a
second loss in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers clinched a playoff spot. They
lost ground to the Kansas City Chiefs, falling a game behind in the race for
the AFC's top seed. The Chiefs held on against Miami, 33-27, to clinch the AFC
West.
The Green
Bay Packers had a great Sunday, beating Detroit 31-24 and clinching the NFC
North. They failed to cover the nine-point spread but now hold the top spot in
the NFC. Their win over the Saints earlier in the season may prove to be a
critical tiebreaker. Shopping

Two
divisions are currently tied, with all four teams involved posting wins.
Tennessee and Indianapolis top the AFC South with 9-4 records.
The same
records are held by the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC
West. Seattle overcame a 15-point spread to trounce the hapless Jet 40-3.

In the nine
games with point spreads less than four points, the underdogs only picked up
victories in three. Overall, the favorites were 12-4 straight up on the week
and 10-6 against the spread. Besides the Eagles win, the other most impactful
upset was Washington's victory over San Francisco.
San
Francisco entered the neutral site game in Arizona as three-point favorites,
hanging onto slim playoff hopes. With the win, Washington was able to get to
6-7 and pull into the lead in the NFC East.
Starting
quarterback Alex Smith suffered a calf injury for Washington, putting the rest
of their season in doubt.

Under the
Weather
Even though
the under bet paid off in 10 of 16 games, three games had point totals far over
the line. The Ravens and Browns combined for 89 points, almost double the
over/under of 45.5.
The Colts
piled it up in a 44-27 win over the Raiders, beating the over/under by 18.5
points. In a game with few playoff implications, Denver defeated Carolina 32-27
in a game with a line of 44.5 points.
