NFL Week 16
By the Numbers
Week 16 was
a good week for sportsbooks and a handful of bettors who had the cojones to
jump on some underdogs. The Bengals won as 7.5-point dogs and the Jets
really brought it home for the books winning for just the second time this
season as 6.5-point underdogs.
Cleveland
was clearly the biggest disappointment of the week. Favored by 6.5 against the
Jets, the Browns had to go without their top four wide receivers due to
COVID-19. The result was a disastrous loss, one that could ultimately cost
Cleveland a playoff spot.

Over
bettors in Saturday’s Tampa Bay-Detroit clash were giddy with excitement when
the Bucs jumped out to a 34-0 lead at halftime. Heading into the fourth
quarter, Tampa Bay held a 47-7 lead and the anticipation of a winning ticket
was building.
But, the
building stopped as Detroit put in third-string QB David Blough and Blaine
Gabbert took over for Tampa Bay. The result was a scoreless fourth quarter
leaving Over bettors wondering why neither team could even kick a field goal in
the final 15 minutes.

Prime
Time Under
Speaking of
totals bets, a recent trend is continuing. In 2019, the Under went 31-17-1
(64.6 percent) in 49 prime time games. So far in 2020, the Under is a healthy
27-19 (58.7 percent).
In Week 16,
the Over was 2-0 heading into the Buffalo-New England Monday night clash. The
Dolphins pulled off a miracle comeback and wound up beating the Raiders 26-25
to go Over 47 on Saturday night.
Green Bay
poured it on Tennessee in a 40-14 win. The total of 54 also led to a narrow
Over (52). The Bills-Patriots total is 46.5.

Half a
Million
Have half a
million dollars laying around? One lucky bettor did last week and he decided to
put it all down on Carolina on the moneyline. If there is a solid wager in the
NFL, it is on Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater who is now 20-2 when playing as a
road underdog.
Bridgewater
led Carolina to a 20-13 win, which also cost Washington a shot at clinching the
NFC East. The Panthers win netted the lucky bettor $434,782.60. That wasn’t the
bettor’s only Week 16 win either.
The same
bettor wagered $100,000 on the Jets to cover the spread and another $170,000 on
the Packers on the moneyline, both of which were wins.

Eight
& Ten
Heading
into the final week of the 2020 regular season, there are eight teams in the
AFC and ten in the NFC that still have shots at the postseason. Seven teams -
three in the AFC and four in the NFC - have clinched spots in the playoffs.
The biggest
question in the AFC is who will win the AFC South. If Tennessee beats Houston,
it wins the division and goes to the playoffs. Indianapolis must win and get
some help just to make the postseason.
The big
deal in the NFC is the East. Washington will win the division if they beat
Philadelphia on Sunday night. If the Football Team loses, the winner of the Cowboys-Giants
game earlier in the day will win the division.
Arizona and
the Rams play what is essentially a play-in game. The winner is in for sure. If
the Rams lose, they would need help to get in.
