Saturday’s Sports Recap

Pitt escapes in Blacksburg, Northwestern makes a statement, and Liberty takes care of business on a college football Friday.

Covers games played Friday, . Dates use Eastern Time.

Friday’s completed FBS slate delivered three very different stories: a game decided by a missed kick, a convincing underdog win, and a road favorite that built enough of a cushion to withstand late scoring. Here are the finals and the details worth carrying into your next handicapping review.

Friday’s final scores

College Football · FBS completed games
MatchupFinal
Pittsburgh at Virginia TechPitt 35–33
Liberty at DelawareLiberty 30–14
Penn State at NorthwesternNorthwestern 34–13

College Football coverage in this recap includes FBS games, the division covered by our handicapping service.

NFL: No Friday games.

MLB: No games scheduled Friday.

NBA: No Friday games; preseason play begins Saturday, October 3.

College Basketball: No men’s games on Friday’s scoreboard.

Three highlights from the night

1. Pitt survives the final swing

Virginia Tech jumped ahead 14–0, but Pitt eventually took a 35–24 lead. A safety and a touchdown brought the Hokies within two before John Love’s 36-yard field-goal attempt missed left as time expired. Pitt stayed unbeaten at 5–0.

ISR perspective: A two-point final margin can hide a night of major momentum changes. The missed kick changed the outright winner; it did not turn a low-scoring game into a high-scoring one. Separating those two stories makes a postgame review more useful.

2. Northwestern’s ground game sets the tone

Northwestern opened its new stadium with a 34–13 win over Penn State. Caleb Komolafe and Joe Himon II combined for 350 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

ISR perspective: The result deserves a closer look at the rushing matchup, rather than a blanket assumption that either team’s next game will follow the same script. Check how those yards were generated and how the next opponent defends similar runs.

3. Liberty’s cushion holds through late scoring

Liberty led 30–0 in the fourth quarter before Delaware scored twice. Kam Davis finished with 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Flames won 30–14.

ISR perspective: Delaware’s late points narrowed the margin without changing the winner. They also mattered to the total. Reviewing the scoring sequence helps distinguish a competitive game from one whose final score became closer late.

Friday’s betting notebook

These are results against the specific source lines linked below, not a claim that every sportsbook used the same closing number. ATS means against the spread.

Pitt: underdog wins outright.
Action Network listed Pitt +2.5 and a total of 54.5. Pitt’s two-point win covered that spread; the combined 68 points finished over that total.
Liberty: favorite covers, total stays under.
Oddschecker’s Friday 4:30 p.m. ET preview listed Liberty −7 and a total of 50. The 16-point victory covered −7, while 44 combined points stayed under 50.
Northwestern: underdog covers; a tight total finish.
FOX Sports displayed Northwestern +3 and 46.5. Northwestern covered; 47 points went over by half a point.

The last result is a useful reminder to keep the actual number with your betting record. A 47-point game is an over at 46.5, a push at 47, and an under at 47.5. Those are different outcomes from the same football game—not different opinions about which team played better.

What to carry forward

Use the recap to identify questions for the next matchup: can Pitt avoid another early deficit, how transferable is Northwestern’s rushing success, and can Liberty maintain control against a different defensive front? Friday’s answers add context. They do not, by themselves, settle the next spread or total.
