No. 1 Texas is 4–0; Oklahoma is 2–2. The Red River Rivalry is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern at the Cotton Bowl on ABC. The neutral-site setting and rivalry history are context, not a reason to ignore the current lineups.

Reported facts and availability

Texas quarterback Arch Manning has 862 passing yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in ESPN’s current season totals. Oklahoma’s John Mateer has 883 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons is credited with 7.5 sacks.

Oklahoma’s Friday SEC availability report lists left tackle Michael Fasusi and several skill-position players out, with guard Eddy Pierre-Louis doubtful and corner Eli Bowen questionable. Texas lists receiver Kaliq Lockett, offensive lineman Jordan Coleman and defensive lineman Zion Williams out; defensive lineman Justus Terry is questionable. Final 90-minute designations remain more authoritative than a Friday list.

ISR analysis: what changes the matchup

Oklahoma’s protection plan is the clearest tactical issue. Missing or limited linemen can force quicker throws, extra protection or a narrower route tree. Texas should not be credited with pressure before it happens, but Simmons’ production makes every third-and-long more expensive.

For Texas, the question is whether Manning can stay patient if Oklahoma crowds intermediate windows. A rivalry can produce emotional swings, but those swings still arrive through specific plays: penalties, turnovers and failed fourth downs. Tracking those decisions is more useful than assuming the series automatically creates chaos.

Oklahoma can reduce the protection burden by staying efficient on first down. The Sooners do not need every early play to be explosive; they need enough manageable downs to preserve run-pass uncertainty. Texas’ response will show whether it can stop the run without sacrificing coverage help.

Factors to watch

  • Oklahoma’s starting offensive line and use of extra protection.
  • Texas’ pressure rate before blitzing.
  • Early-down efficiency and third-down distance.
  • Penalties and field position in the neutral-site environment.
