Trail Blazers at Lakers: A Strong-Start Rematch With Different Guard Depth

Portland is 6–1 and Los Angeles 7–2. Their second meeting calls for a fresh look at the available handlers and interior assignments.

Portland visits the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on Friday at 10 p.m. EST. The Trail Blazers are 6–1 after Wednesday’s 132–119 win at Phoenix. The Lakers are 7–2 after a 116–103 win at Sacramento. Portland won their October 27 meeting 136–129.

Reported facts: use the current guards, not an old depth chart

The NBA’s November 6, 7:30 a.m. Eastern report lists Portland’s Ja Morant, Shaedon Sharpe and Vit Krejčí out. The Lakers list Walker Kessler available with a left-finger splint and Sandro Mamukelashvili questionable with illness. Assignment-related absences are listed separately.

Portland’s Wednesday starters were Damian Lillard, Scoot Henderson, Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara and Donovan Clingan. Lillard scored 25, Avdija had twelve assists and Clingan collected eleven rebounds. Los Angeles started Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Matisse Thybulle, Jake LaRavia and Kessler against Sacramento.

These recent starting units are the expected framework, not announced Friday fives. Portland’s absent guards and the Lakers’ reserve-frontcourt designation remain relevant even if the first groups are unchanged.

ISR analysis: review the coverage after the first pass

The earlier head-to-head score is useful history, not a ready-made total for the rematch. Inspect how the teams created their opportunities, which lineups handled those possessions and whether the same assignments remain available.

Against Dončić, Portland’s first defender cannot explain the entire coverage. Help timing determines the next pass, the weak-side closeout and the rebounding matchup. Track those consequences rather than judging a defensive decision only by his scoring total.

Portland’s available handling offers a parallel question for Los Angeles: can the defense remove an opening advantage without leaving an easy second action? Follow Avdija’s connecting passes and the spacing around Clingan’s interior work, with the active group kept in view.

Factors to watch

  • Confirmed starters and Mamukelashvili’s final status.
  • Portland’s guard workload with three listed absences.
  • The next pass after either defense sends help.
  • Rebounding and transition balance after missed shots.

4 STAR★★★★
NFL

Jacksonville -2.5 over New England (NFL)

Playable range: -1 to -4.5

Why we like this pick

I like Jacksonville’s opportunity to turn New England’s early ball-security problems into an advantage at home. Drake Maye entered this game with four interceptions through two weeks, while the Jaguars had already produced three takeaways. That creates a path to shorter fields if Jacksonville’s front can apply pressure. On offense, Trevor Lawrence has capable options in Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers, but protection against New England’s strong defensive front is essential. The Patriots are disciplined enough to keep this competitive; I’m backing Jacksonville to make the more decisive plays and cover a manageable home spread.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Washington +8 over Seattle (NFL)

Playable range: +10 to +6

Why we like this pick

I like Washington getting more than a touchdown at home. Losing Jayden Daniels matters, but Marcus Mariota is an experienced replacement who played well in relief the previous week and is willing to challenge defenses downfield. Seattle is missing both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada, which creates an opportunity for Washington to find enough scoring plays to stay close. The Seahawks had converted only three of seven red-zone trips into touchdowns through two games. Washington’s own injuries and Seattle’s strong defense are concerns, but this number gives the Commanders room to cover without winning outright.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Detroit -6.5 over N.Y. Jets (NFL)

Playable range: -5 to -8.5

Why we like this pick

I’m backing Detroit’s offensive balance at Ford Field, particularly with Blake Miller and Christian Mahogany trending toward a return to the line. Their presence would help the Lions establish the run and avoid obvious passing situations against a Jets defense that entered the game ranked first overall. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s strong start gives Jared Goff a dependable target to keep drives moving. The concern is Detroit’s defense, which had allowed too many explosive plays through two weeks. This pick depends on cleaner defensive execution and Detroit sustaining drives well enough to build a clear winning margin.
