Missouri State at Delaware: Check the Quarterback, Not the Passing Leader

Two 2–4 teams meet with changed quarterback context. Henry Belin IV’s listed role and Delaware’s availability make current assignments essential.

Missouri State visits Delaware at Delaware Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. Both programs are 2–4. Missouri State is 1–1 in Conference USA; Delaware is 0–2. This is their first meeting.

Reported facts: the recent starts are the relevant ones

Missouri State's game-week depth chart lists Henry Belin IV first at quarterback, ahead of Skyler Locklear. Belin completed 28 of 39 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears' 24–21 win over Kennesaw State. Receiver Isaiah Myers caught seven passes for 135 yards and both touchdowns.

Delaware's official preview says season passing leader Nick Minicucci missed the previous two games with an injury. Tyler Bell made his first career start in the 33–30 loss at Middle Tennessee, passing for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Bell is the recent starter around whom to begin preparation; his next start remains subject to the team's final announcement and Minicucci's availability.

Minicucci's season total and a generic listing of Locklear as Missouri State's leading passer do not supersede those more recent assignments. The two schools' previews illustrate why a passing-leader panel is not a starting-lineup announcement.

The official material checked does not provide a complete current medical clearance list. Missouri State's notes still list Breezy Dubar in the backfield, while recent injury coverage has raised questions about his availability. Treat that job as conditional and confirm final personnel; being printed on a depth chart is not proof of clearance.

ISR analysis: compare the offense each quarterback is being asked to run

Belin's productive first start creates a useful film sample, not a finished evaluation. Watch the protection and route timing behind his completions, especially whether the same windows remain available when Delaware changes the pressure picture.

Bell's recent start similarly supplies more relevant evidence than a season total accumulated by a different quarterback. Review the first read, the response when it is covered and whether an early-down incompletion changes the next call. Avoid treating every team passing yard as if it belonged to the same player and system state.

The backfield matters to this comparison even on passing downs. Actual personnel determine who handles a pressure pickup, a checkdown or the first run after a defensive substitution. Resolve those jobs from current usage rather than an old name at the top of a statistics page.

Factors to watch

  • Confirmed quarterbacks and Minicucci's final availability.
  • Missouri State's available running-back group.
  • Belin's connection with Myers against a different coverage plan.
  • How both offenses respond when the first passing option disappears.

4 STAR★★★★
NFL

Jacksonville -2.5 over New England (NFL)

Playable range: -1 to -4.5

Why we like this pick

I like Jacksonville’s opportunity to turn New England’s early ball-security problems into an advantage at home. Drake Maye entered this game with four interceptions through two weeks, while the Jaguars had already produced three takeaways. That creates a path to shorter fields if Jacksonville’s front can apply pressure. On offense, Trevor Lawrence has capable options in Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers, but protection against New England’s strong defensive front is essential. The Patriots are disciplined enough to keep this competitive; I’m backing Jacksonville to make the more decisive plays and cover a manageable home spread.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Washington +8 over Seattle (NFL)

Playable range: +10 to +6

Why we like this pick

I like Washington getting more than a touchdown at home. Losing Jayden Daniels matters, but Marcus Mariota is an experienced replacement who played well in relief the previous week and is willing to challenge defenses downfield. Seattle is missing both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada, which creates an opportunity for Washington to find enough scoring plays to stay close. The Seahawks had converted only three of seven red-zone trips into touchdowns through two games. Washington’s own injuries and Seattle’s strong defense are concerns, but this number gives the Commanders room to cover without winning outright.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Detroit -6.5 over N.Y. Jets (NFL)

Playable range: -5 to -8.5

Why we like this pick

I’m backing Detroit’s offensive balance at Ford Field, particularly with Blake Miller and Christian Mahogany trending toward a return to the line. Their presence would help the Lions establish the run and avoid obvious passing situations against a Jets defense that entered the game ranked first overall. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s strong start gives Jared Goff a dependable target to keep drives moving. The concern is Detroit’s defense, which had allowed too many explosive plays through two weeks. This pick depends on cleaner defensive execution and Detroit sustaining drives well enough to build a clear winning margin.
