An NBA team can shoot free throws accurately and still receive very little scoring from the line. Another can miss more often but create enough attempts to make free throws a larger part of its offense.
For handicapping research, keep opportunity and accuracy separate. The first asks how often a team gets attempts. The second asks what it does with them.
Start with two distinct measurements
Free-throw percentage is made free throws divided by attempted free throws. To describe opportunity in a simple review sheet, you can also divide free-throw attempts by field-goal attempts. Label that calculation explicitly as FTA/FGA; do not assume every source uses the same definition when it says free-throw rate.
Neither measurement is a complete offensive rating. The denominator, the players taking the attempts and the circumstances behind the fouls still matter.
A hypothetical comparison
Imagine Team A makes 14 of 16 free throws and Team B makes 24 of 32. Team A shoots 87.5%; Team B shoots 75%. The more accurate team receives 14 points at the line, while the other receives 24.
If both teams attempt 80 field goals, their FTA/FGA figures are 0.20 and 0.40. Those figures describe different opportunities, not a prediction that either team will repeat its next result.
Find the possessions behind the attempts
Review how the offense generated its trips. Was a ballhandler reaching the paint? Did a rolling big receive the ball with a defender behind him? Did an offensive rebound produce another contested attempt?
These sequences ask different questions of the next opponent. A defense that stops an initial drive may still concede a foul while recovering to the next action. The free-throw total alone cannot identify which part of the possession created the problem.
Keep the game situation attached
Late intentional fouling can inflate an attempt total. Technical-foul attempts and unusual end-of-game sequences can also make a single game's number less representative of the regular offense.
Do not erase those points from the result. Label the situations so a late-game strategy does not get mistaken for repeated success attacking a defender during ordinary possessions.
Check who was on the floor
A team's overall free-throw percentage combines different shooters. A rotation change can alter both the players creating contact and the players finishing the attempts. Compare the available group instead of assuming the full-season average belongs equally to every lineup.
A short run of exceptional shooting is also a limited sample. Record attempts alongside percentages and avoid turning a handful of misses into a permanent player label.
A practical review sheet
- Opportunity: Attempts and an explicitly defined denominator.
- Accuracy: Makes, attempts and the individual shooters.
- Creation: The action that drew the foul.
- Context: Ordinary play, late intentional fouling or another special situation.
- Personnel: The lineup available for the next matchup.
The useful conclusion is a clearer description of the offense, not an automatic side or total. Reaching the line and converting there are related—but they are not interchangeable.
