Notre Dame vs. Villanova: New Roles Take the Floor in Rome

The men’s season opens at a neutral venue in Italy. Notre Dame’s center availability and both teams’ new combinations are the first checkpoints.

Notre Dame and Villanova open the men’s college basketball season Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on FOX. The Eternal City Tip-Off is at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, Italy. Both teams are 0–0. Villanova’s home-team listing is administrative; this is a neutral-site game.

Reported facts: exhibition evidence, not regular-season form

Villanova’s official schedule lists exhibition wins over Rutgers, 77–75, and George Mason, 84–67, followed by a 93–71 loss to Virginia. VU Hoops reports Notre Dame lost 75–65 at Dayton and beat DePaul 71–63 in exhibitions. Those results are preparation evidence and do not count toward either team’s regular-season record.

Notre Dame’s official preview identifies returning Villanova guard Tyler Perkins and newcomers Kwame Evans Jr. and Devin Royal as prominent pieces. Action Network’s October 31 preview projects Notre Dame’s Braeden Smith, Braeden Shrewsberry, Ethan Roberts and Brady Koehler alongside Logan Duncomb—or Tommy Ahneman if Duncomb cannot play. It reports Duncomb played only four minutes against DePaul and missed the Dayton exhibition, with no public status update at that check. This is an attributed projection, not a confirmed starting five or a medical diagnosis.

ISR analysis: look for the connections between new pieces

Opening-day offense can look organized until the first action is stopped. Watch who initiates the second action, whether the spacing survives a substitution and how quickly the ball reaches an available shooter. Do not treat a roster’s familiar names as proof that its new combinations already function together.

Notre Dame’s center availability affects screening, rebounding and the next pass after pressure. Villanova’s frontcourt combinations deserve the same possession-level review. A useful first comparison is whether an initial defensive stop becomes a completed possession with a rebound.

The overseas setting adds travel and routine changes for both teams. It does not establish a one-sided advantage, and a short exhibition sample cannot quantify the adjustment by itself.

Factors to watch

  • Duncomb’s final availability and both announced starting units.
  • Secondary handling after the first action stalls.
  • Frontcourt assignments in reserve-heavy groups.
  • Defensive rebounding before transition opportunities.

4 STAR★★★★
NFL

Jacksonville -2.5 over New England (NFL)

Playable range: -1 to -4.5

Why we like this pick

I like Jacksonville’s opportunity to turn New England’s early ball-security problems into an advantage at home. Drake Maye entered this game with four interceptions through two weeks, while the Jaguars had already produced three takeaways. That creates a path to shorter fields if Jacksonville’s front can apply pressure. On offense, Trevor Lawrence has capable options in Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers, but protection against New England’s strong defensive front is essential. The Patriots are disciplined enough to keep this competitive; I’m backing Jacksonville to make the more decisive plays and cover a manageable home spread.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Washington +8 over Seattle (NFL)

Playable range: +10 to +6

Why we like this pick

I like Washington getting more than a touchdown at home. Losing Jayden Daniels matters, but Marcus Mariota is an experienced replacement who played well in relief the previous week and is willing to challenge defenses downfield. Seattle is missing both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada, which creates an opportunity for Washington to find enough scoring plays to stay close. The Seahawks had converted only three of seven red-zone trips into touchdowns through two games. Washington’s own injuries and Seattle’s strong defense are concerns, but this number gives the Commanders room to cover without winning outright.

3 STAR★★★
NFL

Detroit -6.5 over N.Y. Jets (NFL)

Playable range: -5 to -8.5

Why we like this pick

I’m backing Detroit’s offensive balance at Ford Field, particularly with Blake Miller and Christian Mahogany trending toward a return to the line. Their presence would help the Lions establish the run and avoid obvious passing situations against a Jets defense that entered the game ranked first overall. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s strong start gives Jared Goff a dependable target to keep drives moving. The concern is Detroit’s defense, which had allowed too many explosive plays through two weeks. This pick depends on cleaner defensive execution and Detroit sustaining drives well enough to build a clear winning margin.
